Wildfires

客座编辑:Michał Słowiński & Krishna Prasad Vadrevu

Wildfires are uncontrolled fires that burn in wild and rural areas. Naturally occurring fires are vital for some forest, savannah, and grassland ecosystems. However, the frequency and intensity of wildfires has increased tremendously in recent decades due to climate change, land cover transformation, and other anthropogenic activities. These fires can become severe natural disasters, with immediate and long lasting negative consequences to human populations and the natural environment.

The Collection is dedicated to the latest research on wildfires, including understanding their origin and physical properties, evolutionary and ecological influence. We also welcome submissions on forecasting techniques, fire detection and suppression, as well as the short and long term implications for human populations.

Technologies for beyond 5G networking

客座编辑:Domenico Ciuonzo, Kapal Dev, Toktam Mahmoodi & Shouhuai Xu

Currently 5G capabilities are well established; however, due to the increasing demand imposed by modern society through e.g. virtual and augmented reality, and ubiquitous mobile communications, further advances are desirable. In the past few years, there has been much effort from the engineering community to develop solutions that will lead to the next generation of mobile wireless communication, with a particular interest in millimiter and teraherz waves. Next generation mobile communication technologies are expected to dramatically increase the speed and bandwidth of our networks, enabling larger and faster information transfer and interconnectedness.

This Collection welcomes research resulting in developments in technologies beyond 5G networking.

Host-parasite interactions

客座编辑:Rajiv Kumar & Andrew Williams

The study of host–parasite interactions is crucial in understanding parasitic infection and adaptation within the host. It can also help with identifying prevention strategies and treatment regimes for parasitic infections and explore the ross-talk between the parasites and their host. In this collection, Scientific Reports welcomes primary research articles that explore this interaction including research on molecular interactions, computational studies, intra-species interactions, host responses to infection, ecological and evolutionary dynamics of hosts and parasites, immunological impact in the host, host behaviours, modelling the host-parasite interactions and much more. We also welcome studies that explore this interaction towards diagnosis and treatment of disease. This collection welcomes all manuscripts in this area.

Multiscale Modeling for Heterogeneous Catalysis

客座编辑:Sourav Biswas, Gil Alberto Batista Gonçalves & Lyudmila Moskaleva

The advancement of heterogeneous catalysis is limited by our understanding of the synergy between the different components of a reaction in progress. Multiscale modelling promises to address the need to understand the interplay of the many relevant factors and their evolution over time. The past decade has witnessed rapid development of multiscale modelling in establishing reaction mechanisms, identifying catalytically active structures, and optimising reactor design. Meanwhile, an ongoing paradigm shift from static to dynamic system modelling drives the evolution of new methodologies, such as coupling with in-situ analytical techniques and data-driven approaches. This Collection seeks to showcase recent advances in modelling catalytic systems of higher mechanistic, structural, and transport complexities, and explore new methodologies with consideration of the evolving state of heterogeneous catalysts.

Integrated Photonics

客座编辑:Davide Bacco, Judith Su & Winnie Ye

Integrated photonics is a branch of study that examines the ability of integrated devices such as waveguides, lasers, detectors, etc on a single chip to achieve faster and more efficient transmission and processing of information. Although photonic circuits operate in a way that appears to be similar to that of electrons in electronic circuits, they rely on photons which travel at the speed of light, and consequently, they don’t have the same thermal problems. Photonic circuits also allow quantum phenomena to be exploited in processing. Such advantages can be paramount in a variety of applications including quantum computing and communications.

This Collection seeks to showcase the latest advances in integrated photonics, looking at the next generation of integrated photonic systems as well as the applications of their components.

Light sheet microscopy

客座编辑:Andrea Bassi & Oliver Biehlmaier

The ability to image biological samples with a high spatio-temporal resolution is becoming increasingly important in biological and medical applications. In such applications, light sheet microscopy, which exploits principles of single plane illumination microscopy as well as digital scanned laser microscopy, are paramount: light sheet microscopy takes advantage of its optical sectioning capability, allowing 3D image reconstruction of large biological samples. This is helping researchers overcome problems typical to older microscopy methods, as photobleaching and phototoxicity.

This Collection invites research on the latest developments in light sheet microscopy, it focuses on its use in biological and medical applications as well as looking into the latest photonics technologies for the developments of next generation of systems.

Mitochondrial dynamics

客座编辑:Petr Ježek & Kezhong Zhang

Mitochondria are made up of an inner and outer membrane each with distinct functions, with an inter-membrane space between, and the membranes undergo dynamic fusion and fission that changes the morphological structure of the mitochondria, which is critical for its function and cellular homeostasis. Yet, a complete understanding of all the protein players involved in regulating mitochondrial dynamics and morphology remains elusive.

This Collection offers a platform for research that advances our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that modulate changes in mitochondrial morphology and subcellular distribution, fusion and fission dynamics, and also work that elucidates the molecular machinery mediating mitochondrial dynamics, and elaborates their role in cellular function.

Decision making in digital & video games

客座编辑:Erkin Asutay & Jussi Palomäki

With the ubiquity of computers in the modern age has come the widespread availability of video games. These can provide researchers with a tool to study risk taking and decision making, but the games themselves may also influence the behaviours of those who participate. Research into both areas is steadily increasing, and through this we are gaining insight into the effects of how engaging with different types of video games can impact on decision making abilities.

This Collection welcomes original research that studies the effect of gaming on risk taking and decision making, or research that uses games to study these characteristics.

Sustainable communities

客座编辑:Ronita Bardhan, Idiano D’Adamo & Caroline Hachem-Vermette

As a consequence of growing populations and more frequent climate change effects, urban and rural communities are increasingly under pressure to reduce their environmental impact and protect their citizens against socio-economic change and natural disasters. In order to overcome these challenges, the United Nations has set up the development of sustainable communities across the world as one of its main targets for 2030. Sustainable communities aim to achieve energy independence, as well as the effective and balanced use of natural resources, while maintaining productivity and preserving their cultural and natural heritage. These are key challenges to make an economy more resilient to change and allow citizens to be active participants in the green transition.

This Collection invites submissions of original research on sustainable communities, their impact, and the tools required to empower citizens, across different socio-economic spectra, to drive social change.
