吃很多,拉很多……这些“外星生物”养起来有多费劲?

世上有各种各样的工作,有些人搬砖,有的人在搬“头足类动物”。
养育头足类动物,正是一些水族师的日常工作。头足类动物,顾名思义就是——头上长脚的动物。这个词或许听起来有点奇怪,但说到章鱼、乌贼、鱿鱼等动物就不陌生了。
“照顾一只头足类动物,就像照顾一个外星生物。”蒙特利湾水族馆负责养育头足类动物的工作人员开玩笑说道。馆内展览的一些头足类动物不是出于野外捕捉,而是馆内的养育。
1. 等待成年个体交配,然后收集受精卵;
2. 照顾受精卵直到它们孵化;
3. 照顾刚孵化的幼体直到它们成年。
说起来听着简单,做起来可太难了。头足类动物非常敏感,因此饲养它们有很多注意事项。更麻烦的是,每一种头足类动物还都有自己的需求和喜好。
挑选受精卵
大多数头足类的卵都是透明的,因此人们可以观测到卵内胚胎的发育情况。看起来无法存活的卵就会被移除,健康的胚胎就根据它们的发育阶段进行分类。

低头对着培养皿,在照明灯旁拿着镊子挑选合适的卵子……这样的姿势,水族馆的工作人员可能要维持好几个小时。这项工作需要手要足够稳!如果手的力度太大,卵就可能提前孵化。

挑选、分类后,这些卵还需要“洗个澡”,除菌或者去掉那些可能会把卵壳吃掉的桡足动物。之后,它们就会被放入不同的水箱,等待孵化。

目前,馆内挑选照顾的卵大约80%都能孵化。孵化后的挑战在于,嗷嗷待哺的幼体有很多。

吃这么多,当然也会拉很多。因此,水质也需要随时检测。此外,就餐环境的光线也得合适,有的喜欢昏暗的环境,有的则能在明亮的环境中饱餐。环境太吵,或者水箱旁路过的人太多,甚至水泵的轻微震动也都会影响它们,让它们感到紧张。

水族馆也会和其他机构交换卵,
既能增加遗传多样性,也能减少野捕。
养头足类动物的工作非常耗时。在相同的时间,水族师需要照顾不同的物种,应对它们不同发育时期的需求。
注意事项非常多,除了食物,水温、气泡量、气泡器放置的角度等因素也都是水族师要注意的。所有这些因素都是过去试错、总结出来的经验。而在此基础上,现在的水族师继续添砖加瓦,丰富养育经验。

最早的头足类动物化石是在5.15亿年前形成,这比恐龙早很多——恐龙的历史也就只2.3亿年。
能和这些奇妙的生物共事也是一项神奇的体验。
