Quantifying the uncertainty in complex adaptive systems

客座编辑:Pinar Acar, Sakdirat Kaewunruen & Rosario Morello

Complex adaptive systems (CASs) are groups of semi-autonomous agents that interact in interdependent ways, to produce system-wide patterns. All CASs share common features, regardless of whether the system in question is an electrical power grid, a building, healthcare, or the brain. As all the CASs exhibit behaviour which cannot be predicted, one of the innate features of such systems is uncertainty. Uncertainty is a large contributor to the non-linearity between cause and effect in CASs. This inability to attribute outcomes to actions effectively halts the possibly numerous applications of CASs in the world. Thus, understanding and quantifying uncertainty in CASs carries a potential for improving predictions and decision-making based on incomplete knowledge, which in turn can enhance the functioning of almost any real-world environment.

This Collection is dedicated to the latest research on quantifying uncertainty in CASs, with a potential to be applied to real-world problems. We will consider submissions on physical and conceptual CASs. We welcome both theoretical and experimental work.

ADHD in adulthood

客座编辑:Giovanni Mento, Alexandra Philipsen & Jaana Simola

ADHD is named for two of the symptoms that are typical of this disorder in childhood - attention deficit and hyperactivity. Adults with ADHD often develop coping mechanisms, may display different symptoms, and are at a higher risk for other conditions such as anxiety and depression, which can make a diagnosis challenging. Additionally, symptoms may present differently in women and those assigned female at birth, adding another layer of complexity to diagnosis in adulthood.

This Collection welcomes original research into diagnoses and experiences of ADHD in adulthood, undertaken from a psychological or psychiatric perspective.

Digitalisation in the school and the workplace

客座编辑:Hussam Mahmoud, Thomas Probst & Samad Sepasgozar

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the acceleration of several societal changes, not least the transition of education and workplace communications to an online setting. While much of this digitalisation was carried out through necessity, the study of the implications of switching to operating models that make greater use of digital resources, online tuition, and video calls is now in full swing.

This Collection invites work that provides insight into the psychology of digitalisation, along with its effects on development, attention, and interaction. Original research studies that result in recommendations about how this switch to digitalisation can be managed are also welcome.

Political Neuroscience

客座编辑:Dezső Németh, Thomas Zoëga Ramsøy & Leor Zmigrod

Political neuroscience, or neuropolitics, is a highly interdisciplinary field that draws from areas as diverse as neuroscience, psychology, and genetics. Studies in political neuroscience may use methods from these areas to answer questions rooted in political science, or try to understand the role of political identities in cognitive functioning.

This Collection seeks to unravel the underpinnings of political attitudes and decision making in humans through innovative and interdisciplinary research that foregrounds rigorous theory-driven or data-driven research. This would include, but is not limited to, correlational studies using recording or neuroimaging tools such as EEG and fMRI, causal, and social psychological interventions.

Freshwater ecology

客座编辑:Gilad Bino, Baoshan Cui & Thomas Hein

Freshwater ecology is the study of the interrelationships between organisms and their physical environmental in freshwater ecosystems. Researchers in this area seek to understand the ecosystem services that various freshwater environments provide, along with the processes and interactions occurring with adjacent terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Freshwater ecosystems are precious resources for the well-being of our planet but are under constant threat from human pressures. Recent decades have seen extraordinary successes in conservation and restoration of freshwater ecosystems, but increased knowledge and continuous efforts are needed if we are to truly preserve such unique habitats.

This Collection welcomes submissions from all fields of ecology, conservation and restoration, environmental sciences, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research, with a focus on freshwater ecosystems and the organisms found within them.

Prenatal diagnostics

客座编辑:Bettina Blaumeiser, Fàtima Crispi & Sek Won Kong

Genetic and chromosomal disorders, like trisomy, or malformations of the fetus can be detected prenatally. Advanced diagnostic methods have been developed and refined over the last decade, which reduce the risk for both the mother as well as the fetus. New methods not only allow the detection of the sex of the future human being and possible chromosomal disorders, but also allow for screening of additional factors, like mutations linked to hereditary diseases, malformations, or even growth restriction.

This collection aims at showcasing the latest advances in the field of prenatal diagnostics ranging from non-invasive clinical methods to molecular biological analysis.

Chemistry beyond controllable nanosynthesis

客座编辑:Zhuoying Chen, Venkataramanan Mahalingam & Yu Xin Zhang

Controllable nanosynthesis is broadly conceived as the propellant for the development of innovative nanotechnologies. Understanding the chemistry beyond controllable nanosynthesis is instrumental in discovering novel design principles and synthetic routes and leading the materials synthesis field to untapped territories. For example, the early days witnessed the investigation of nucleation and growth pathways for nanocrystals lays solid foundations to the rational design of synthetic strategies for producing monodisperse quantum dots and ensuing advent of QLED electronics. As characterization techniques for nanomaterials is maturing, chemists set more audacious goals to push our cognition for controllable growth to atomic-level. We oversee that most of the nanoscience journals expect their publications could demonstrate certain usefulness of the nanomaterials of interest. Scientific Reports, wherein “inclusive” is our most prominent hallmark, attempts to fill a unique niche by launching this themed collection “Chemistry beyond controllable nanosynthesis”. In particular, we embrace manuscripts deepening our insights into chemical parameters governing reproducibility, controllable precursor conversion, directional surface coordination and growth, and structure-property relationships.

Molecular motors

客座编辑:Dan V. Nicolau & Takeshi Sakamoto

Biological molecular motors are sophisticated molecular machines that carry out cellular processes such as muscle contraction, cell division, vesicles and organelle trafficking, and maintain cell shape and mechanical integrity. Linear motors include myosins, kinesins and dyneins, that “walk” along actin filaments or microtubules, and generate mechanical motion using energy from ATP hydrolysis. Other motors include DNA and RNA polymerases and the ribosome, which move unidirectionally along nucleic acids for gene expression. Mutations in motor proteins and dysregulation of motor-driven transport has been linked with a variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, polycystic kidney disease, and cancer. Motor proteins have been extensively studied and structural approaches have provided detailed insight into their functions, however, many questions around the mechanisms of how biological motors operate, remain. Synthetic molecular motors represent a promising alternative approach to gain further insight into the principles by which biological motors function. Better understanding the mechanisms of molecular motors will offer possibilities for developing new therapies.

This Guest Edited Collection welcomes submissions that advance our understanding of the workings of molecular motors, work that engineers and characterises synthetic molecular motors, and articles that highlight new tools and approaches to study molecular motors.

Complex interventions to improve health

客座编辑:Maha El Tantawi, Himanshu Joshi & Bijan Najafi

Many medical interventions consist of a single component, such as the administration of a particular drug. However, health is a complex phenomenon, and it is becoming ever more so with the rise of digital health and the increase in challenges like multimorbidity. Accordingly, there is growing interest in the design, implementation, and assessment of clinical and public health interventions consisting of several interacting components. Such complex interventions can be directed toward individuals, groups, and communities. For example, stroke units coordinate the expertise of neurologists, cardiologists, and other specialists to provide the appropriate testing, treatment, and follow-up instructions. In the realm of public health, community-based programmes can reduce health inequalities through a combination of education and mobile or local treatment centers. While complex interventions present unique challenges, such as the involvement of multiple groups of stakeholders and potential difficulties in assessment and replication, they also hold unique promise in addressing modern healthcare needs.

This Collection invites articles on all aspects of complex interventions to improve health, from the individual to the community level and beyond.
