Conformable Brain-Computer and Brain-Machine Interfaces

Neural interfaces have attracted considerable interest in recent years to advanced applications in neuroscience, robotics, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and (bioelectronic) medicine. They may even influence the entertainment industry’s business model. Conformable interfaces to the surface of the scalp or body (BCI - brain-computer interfaces) or implanted into the brain and nervous system (BMI - brain-machine interfaces) have been explored using certified materials and integration of electronic components on flexible substrates. Flexibility and softness allow these interfaces to conform to curved surfaces, even delicate body parts such as the exceptionally soft brain tissue or to limbs during movement. Conformable interfaces start to provide robust communication channels between the brain and external artifacts like computers or robotic devices.
The particular challenges to overcome lie in intimate contact between hardware and wetware, requiring triple functionality for a very long time for any of these devices: Substrates not only have to support stable active or passive sensors in a demanding geometrical shape, they have to minimize the biological response to foreign objects under tight physical and chemical constraints as well. The unsolved complexity of these requirements asks for novel suitable substrates, such as nanomaterials, all carbon-based materials, novel polymers or even bioproduced structures.
And yet, as recent events concerning brain implants demonstrate, macroscopic aspects of viscoelastic matter mechanics and as well as reliable electronic packaging should not to be forgotten as well.
Last but not least, little can be achieved with new neural interfaces, if the bottle neck provided by power limited in situ processing of the huge data volumes acquired can’t be solved reliably within the biological constraints as well.
This collection aims to track the latest developments and publish interesting investigations on flexible BCIs. The topics will include, but are not limited to:
• Advanced BCI materials
• Novel designs and fabrications of flexible implantable neural microelectrodes
• In vitro flexible microelectrode array
• Novel methods for detecting neural signals
• Flexible electronic circuits and low-power-demanding integrated circuits for high-bandwidth data collection and processing
• Neural encoding and decoding algorithms
• Microsystems for Flexible Brain-Computer Interface
We welcome submissions on flexible Brain-Computer Interfaces. All contributions will undergo the same peer-review process and editorial standards as regular npj Flexible Electronics articles. The Guest Editors declare no competing interests with the submissions they have handled through the peer-review process.
