Immune evasion in cancer
期刊:Scientific Reports
客座编辑:Tanya Nadine Augustine, Anupam Basu, Anutosh Ganguly, Yujin Kudo & Wen H. Shen
The immune system can recognize and destroy malignant cells, providing an important defense against the development of cancer. Therefore, successful cancers must learn to evade the immune system both during development and in the process of metastasis. The approaches taken range from promoting the infiltration and activation of protumorigenic immune cells to downregulating immune checkpoint proteins. Understanding the mechanisms by which cancers evade the immune system is imperative to understanding host-tumor interactions, identifying new treatments, and improving current immunotherapies.
This Collection welcomes original research examining immune evasion in cancer, including studies examining mechanisms of immune evasion and immunotherapies targeting immune evasion.

Advances in climate modeling
期刊:Scientific Reports
客座编辑:AP Dimri & Wei Zhang
Climate models are important tools to aid our understanding of climate dynamics in the past or present, and to inform future predictions. These numerical simulations apply physics and chemistry laws to study the interactions between drivers of climate, such as: atmosphere, ocean, land surface and ice. Although still associated with some uncertainty, modern models have achieved higher-resolution, improved parametrization and high computational performance, becoming more complex and capable of delivering reliable promising results.
This Collection welcomes original research on climate models of variable complexity, including at the global or regional scale.

In-Sensor & Near-Sensor Computing
期刊:npj Unconventional Computing
客座编辑:Kyusang Lee, Mark C. Hersam, Cong Shen, Sahil Shah & Gunuk Wang
In-sensor and near-sensor computing address critical challenges in data processing efficiency and speed by integrating computation within or near the data collection point. This approach aims to reduce the latency and energy cost associated with data movement between sensors and processors, a limitation known as the von Neumann bottleneck. By processing data where it is collected, these technologies improve response times and reduce bandwidth requirements, making them ideal for applications in AI and other data-intensive fields that demand real-time processing. This paradigm shift is becoming increasingly necessary as the scalability of traditional computing hardware faces physical and practical limits, highlighting the importance of innovative architectures that can meet the growing demands of modern technology applications.

Light-induced states of matter
期刊:Communications Materials
客座编辑:Javier Martín-Sánchez, Hamid Ohadi, Yijie Shen, Jun Takeda & Klaas-Jan Tielrooij
The use of light to manipulate electronic states of matter has been a subject of intense investigation since almost two centuries, starting from Becquerel’s 1839 discovery of the photovoltaic effect, and marking pioneering breakthroughs in our understanding of the quantum nature of light and matter, with Einstein’s 1905 theory of the photoelectric effect. However, it is only with the advent of lasers and nonlinear optics that this field experienced a distinctive shift, with the possibility to induce novel light-matter quasiparticle states such as polaritons, or to drive out-of-equilibrium phenomena on time scales of the order of electron dynamics in condensed matter systems.
Recent examples of the progress made along this route include the realization of exciton-polariton condensates in optical microcavities; the development of topological nanophotonics, structured light, and Floquet engineering of quantum materials; the use of ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to drive non-equilibrium phase transitions and induce correlated electronic states such as high-temperature superconductivity; the advance in experimental characterization of electron and lattice dynamics in materials by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, femtosecond laser pulses, higher-harmonic generation, and ultrafast electron diffraction. This Collection brings together the latest advances in the use of nonlinear optical phenomena to induce, manipulate, and probe non-equilibrium states of matter.

Diagnosis of ischemic stroke
期刊:Communications Medicine
客座编辑:Bing Han
We welcome submissions of primary research with a focus on ischemic stroke diagnosis. We encourage submission of manuscripts describing the early detection, prediction or monitoring of ischemic stroke. This includes studies evaluating biomarkers in body fluids, wearables, and imaging methods. We are particularly interested in submissions that cover approaches that can be used in healthcare settings with limited resources.

Marine heatwaves
期刊:Communications Earth & Environment等
编辑团队请参考特刊主页
Unusually warm ocean temperatures at the surface or subsurface can have a detrimental effect on the health of marine ecosystems. Yet marine heatwaves have only come into the focus of ocean research over the course of the past decade or so. Many gaps remain in our knowledge about marine heatwaves; even the definition of exactly what constitutes a marine heatwave is still under debate.
In this Collection we present articles that explore the causes, characteristics and impacts of marine heatwaves. We are pleased to invite submissions of complementary studies and opinion pieces, to broaden the discussion.
