Most people don't want subtitles on the screen as they can be distracting. Some theaters do have closed captioning devices you can ask for, though. I also can't say that I've ever had a problem understanding dialogue.
It would drive me mad if English captions were forced on English language films. I love subtitled foreign films, but I hate same-language captions. In suspenseful movies, subtitles can telegraph important moments; in comedies, they absolutely murder jokes, timing, and delivery. Plus, for whatever reason, even when I don't need them, I find myself always reading along. I can't tune them out.
When I watched movies with my American friends, even they couldn't catch some of the characters' names and had to Google them afterwards. I don't see how that's an enjoyable experience when, during the movie, you can't even hear the names of some important characters because their names are shouted out only once during a super loud action scene.
China's linguistic diversity, characterized by numerous dialects and accents, as well as the complexity of the Chinese writing system, has played a significant role in the widespread use of subtitles in Chinese film and teleplays. The multifaceted nature of the Chinese language, coupled with the use of characters with various meanings, has made subtitles an essential tool for facilitating dialogue comprehension, especially in cross-regional communication and understanding different accents.
Moreover, the cultural and historical context has also contributed to the prevalence of subtitles in Chinese media. The emergence of subtitles in Chinese cinema can be traced back to the mid-20th century, particularly in Hong Kong, where the popularity of Cantonese-language films led to the adoption of captions to bridge the language barrier between Cantonese and Mandarin speakers. This practice laid the foundation for the widespread acceptance of captions in China.
