When Ms Deng from Deqing county, East China's Zhejiang province stumbled upon this botanical oddity in her home, she did what any of us would do: she snapped a pic and shared it on social media. Little did she know, her post would blow up quickly, racking up a whopping 30,000 likes and catching the eyes of some seriously excited researchers, one of them being Xu Rongzhu.
“Schizophyllum typically grows on neutral pH surfaces like decaying wood. Peaches, persimmons, and coconuts have all hosted these fungal freeloaders before,” Xu explains. “Apples, being moderately acidic, should theoretically be inhospitable to this fungus.” But this little guy thrived on a limited apple substrate. More importantly, could this be a sign of a future threat to apple crops?
According to Zhao Qi, such spore-free Schizophyllum commune strains have been developed in China’s space laboratories, through repeated missions carried out by China’s Shenzhou XII, XIV, and XVI rockets.
“I just took a bite, it doesn’t taste special,” Xu said. He explained that the mushroom’s flavor is primarily derived from its own amino acids and chemical compounds, making it unlikely to acquire an apple taste despite growing on the fruit.
The research team has now separated the flesh, core, and peduncle of the apple, separated the hyphae from different parts, and extracted the DNA sequence of the white ginseng fruiting body. It has been identified that the strain belongs to the model species of Schizophyllum commune.
Next, the team will further separate and purify the hyphae, and soon enter the cultivation experiment stage. “After cultivation, I will taste for you once again to see whether the mushroom has obtained the apple flavor.”
