无处可逃就跳河,冒个泡能潜水20分钟,蜥蜴的保命秘籍最近被揭开了

审校 | Ziv 2018年,在哥斯达黎加的山间溪流旁散步时,生态学家林德赛·斯维克(Lindsey Swerk)看到 一只 会潜水 的蜥蜴 。一种半水生的蜥蜴进入水中其实并不奇怪,奇怪的是它居然 能在水里待十几分钟 。 更有意思的是,在水中, 蜥蜴的鼻孔上方会形成一个气泡,气泡还会时不时地放大缩小 ,看起来像是蜥蜴通过这个气泡在水中呼吸。斯维克成功录下了这个画面,而这成了蜥蜴这种行为的首次记录,同时,也使得它们成为 已知的唯一一种带气泡潜水的脊椎动物 。
在哥斯达黎加,一种学名为 Anolis aquaticus 的半水生蜥蜴。视频来源: Lindsey Swerk 斯维克表示发现水蜥蜴在水下“呼吸”的证据纯属偶然,并不在她最初的研究计划之内。“ 我对潜水的时间感到印象深刻,也十分困惑 ,这让我渴望在接下来的几年里用水下摄像机仔细观察。”她说道。从那之后,人们又发现了至少18种其他水蜥蜴也有这种行为。 然而,研究人员一直不确定的是, 这个气泡是否有助于蜥蜴长时间待在水下,或者气泡仅仅是由蜥蜴疏水的皮肤在呼吸时引起的? 在最近发表的一项研究中,斯维克终于通过实验证实了—— 这个气泡确实有助于延长蜥蜴在水下停留的时间 ,鼻子上方的气泡就像人们潜水时会背着一个气瓶。
如果伪装和躲藏都不管用,它们就会潜入溪流里。这通常是最后的选择 ,因为水蜥蜴是冷血动物,根据环境调节体温。当它们潜入凉爽的溪流,它们的体温就会降低,行动变得迟缓,并且还需要花时间来让自己暖和起来。 不过,跳入水中并在水下保持静止,确实能够帮助水蜥蜴躲避许多捕食者。“ 至少对于像我们这些研究人员这样的人类追捕者来说,潜水是迄今为止最有效的逃脱方式 ,” 斯维克说道。“一旦潜入水下,透过流动的水面就很难发现它们。”
