The Walt Disney Co.'s live-action, controversy-bedeviled “Snow White” opened in theaters with a sleepy $43 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

With a budget above $250 million, Snow White had set out with higher ambitions, particularly since it returns Disney to its very origins. There's been a wide variance between the box-office performance of other “live-action” Disney remakes, but Snow White might mark a new nadir.

The reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs as magical creatures, drawing criticism from Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage.

Anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian activists have called for a boycott of the movie over Disney's casting of Israeli actress Gal Gadot, 39, as the evil queen.

Gadot, who starred in the Wonder Woman blockbuster movies, has publicly advocated for Israel over the years, meanwhile Zegler promoted the films new trailer with a 'free Palestine' tag.

The Disney princess genre has had varying levels of success, said Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian, in part because of shifting box office interest and the over-saturation of remakes. "There may be a bit of fatigue on these live-action remakes of classic animated films," he said.

It's likely that Zegler's casting hurt Snow White and caused a distraction, said David A. Gross, who runs movie consultancy FranchiseRe. He said some audiences prefer new and original stories highlighting diverse characters, rather than changing characters for remakes.

Previously, Disney said that the live-action Lilo & Stitch would release in Summer 2025. The latest trailer has sent fans into a frenzy. 

The trailer racked up 158 million views in 24 hours. This is the second-most-watched Disney live-action trailer ever. Only The Lion King's 2019 teaser outperformed it.
