“朱雀玄武敕令”改名“周天紫薇大帝”?不予受理!
A young man's repeated attempts to legally change his name have been rejected by authorities in Hunan province. The man first tried to change his name to Zhuquexuanwu Chiling, meaning the imperial edict of the traditional Chinese mythical creatures Zhuque(Red Bird) and Xuanwu(Black Warrior), and later to Zhoutian Ziweidadi, or Emperor Ziwei of Zhoutian in Taoism.
According to a report, the 24-year-old man from Guiyang county, began altering his name in May 2024. His first request to change his name to Zhuque Xuanwu, symbols also representing the South and North in Chinese cosmology, evolved into the more elaborate Zhuquexuanwu Chiling in subsequent filings.
On April 16, his application for Zhoutian Ziweidadi was denied. A subsequent request on Saturday to adopt Zhu Xianning, a name approved by his family, is under review.
The Civil Code of China stipulates that citizens generally adopt paternal or maternal surnames. Exceptions require that legitimate reasons not contravening public order and good customs. Ethnic minorities may follow traditional naming conventions.
