The Renhuai Municipal Market Supervision and Administration Bureau issued an official statement on Friday addressing a viral video alleging that a chicken leg sold by Zhengxin Chicken Steak, a popular Chinese fast-food chain, was infested with maggots.
The controversy began on Thursday when a social media user posted footage showing maggots crawling inside a chicken leg reportedly purchased from a Zhengxin Chicken Steak.
In response, an employee from the involved store claimed the customer had purchased the product in the morning but returned it hours later. "We resolved the issue through compensation and reported the matter to the police," a staff said, adding that the video was filmed by a bystander, not the customer.
Many netizens expressed disgust, calling on relevant authorities to strengthen regulation.
Zhengxin Chicken Steak, founded in 2000 by entrepreneur Chen Chuanwu—dubbed the "snack king"—rose to prominence for its affordable prices and signature fried chicken. Originally a diversified snack brand, the company rebranded in the early 2000s to focus on its bestselling items, including chicken cutlets and skewers.
