"We are deeply saddened to inform everyone that our beloved Menglong passed away after a fall on Thursday. According to the police investigation, criminality has been ruled out. May the deceased rest in peace, and may the living remain strong," read a notice released by Yu's working studio on Thursday.

The news shocked China's entertainment industry, with actors Sun Qian and Song Yanfei among those posting tributes.
That evening, Douyin reported that it had identified a wave of unverified speculation about Yu's death, including rumors concerning his personal struggles and career. The platform said it removed more than 1,300 pieces of false content and penalized users who created or spread the rumors, including suspensions, bans, and removal of posting privileges.
