The incident happened on the afternoon of Oct 15, when Ding's grandparents took her to the fields in Dayingzi village, Heishui town, for the autumn harvest. Around 1 pm, they left her asleep in a van. When her grandmother returned 20 minutes later, the girl was gone — the door was closed, but a window had been opened.
Her disappearance sparked widespread concern across the country, prompting thousands of residents and volunteers to join the search effort. Authorities deployed drones, search dogs, and thermal imaging devices in a large-scale, around-the-clock operation.
