A heartwarming story has drawn widespread attention in China after a man broke a stranger's car window to access an automated external defibrillator (AED) for a family member suffering cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred on March 10 in Weihai, Shandong province. A local resident, upon learning that a nearby vehicle was marked with an AED sign, tried to contact the owner when a family member went into cardiac arrest. Unable to reach him by phone, the resident made the urgent decision to break the window and retrieve the life-saving device.

The car owner, surnamed Li, told reporters he had been resting at a hotel after meeting friends earlier that day. At around 11 pm, he woke up and noticed several missed calls but assumed they were spam. About an hour later, the resident, whose family member had gone into cardiac arrest, contacted Li via WeChat and explained the emergency that led to the damage.

Upon learning what had happened, Li responded with understanding: "If there was a need, break it. A human life outweighs a broken piece of glass."

The next day, the family called again to express their gratitude and offered to pay for the repair, but Li declined, saying he would cover the cost himself.

The incident has also sparked broader discussion about the role of privately owned AEDs in emergency response systems. While some questioned whether breaking the window was justified, first aid expert Liu Qin suggested the focus should be on how to better integrate such resources into urban emergency networks.

"Imagine if mobile AEDs could be connected to the 120 emergency dispatch system and become part of the city's emergency response infrastructure," Liu said.

Liu added that experts are exploring ways to ensure AEDs can reach patients within the "golden four minutes" — or even faster. "At present, the biggest bottlenecks remain device density and the public's understanding of how to use an AED," he said.
