“粉色蓝莓一颗难求”上热搜,网友:真不是AI生成?
A berry with a blush has turned the fruit world pink. Recently, "pink blueberries" have taken Chinese social media by storm, captivating consumers with their dreamy, pastel appearance and sparking a heated debate about whether the fruit is even real.
The vibrant images quickly went viral on platforms like Weibo, where some users initially mistook the pink-hued berries for AI-generated graphics, while others hailed them as the newest "aesthetic icon" of the fruit aisle.
Contrary to initial skepticism, pink blueberries are not the product of digital trickery. Sun Haiyue, a professor of blueberry germplasm resources and genetic breeding at Jilin Agricultural University, confirmed to Cover News that pink blueberries are a legitimate, naturally occurring variety. "This is indeed a special variety. The fruit is pink, but it is still classified as a blueberry," Sun said.
The fruit's pedigree traces back to the United States. According to a book edited by blueberry expert professor Li Yadong, a pink-fruited variety named "Pink Lady" was developed in 1996 by a US blueberry breeder through cross-breeding. The "Pink Lady" has a sister variety known as "Pink Champagne".
While these varieties were introduced to China for trial planting and experimental promotion over a decade ago, and domestic growing regions are attempting to breed their own cultivars, large-scale commercial cultivation has not yet been achieved.
However, experts caution that the highly saturated, uniform pink images circulating online may not reflect reality. He Jiawei, director of the Institute of Alpine Economic Plants at the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, noted that naturally ripe "Pink Lady" blueberries are not entirely pink. Instead, they exhibit a pinkish-purple hue, with white or greenish coloring at the stem end, and rarely appear as solid pink or red in their natural state. Images showing a uniformly vibrant pink color are likely the result of digital editing.

Despite the intense online buzz, actual pink blueberries are nearly impossible to find. Searches on major Chinese e-commerce platforms have turned up no fresh pink blueberries for sale. The few social media users who have claimed to purchase the berries reported exorbitant prices, with some paying as much as 400 yuan per 500 grams.
A fruit shop owner told reporters that while many retailers are scrambling to stock the novelty item, suppliers have uniformly reported extremely limited supplies, with numerous brand-name fruit shops all competing for the same scarce supply.
