A 7-year-old girl in Xiangyang, Hubei province, may have helped save her younger brother from a life-threatening medical emergency after noticing an unusual change in his cough in the middle of the night.
The girl, who shares a bedroom with her 5-year-old brother, woke up when his cough suddenly sounded different. What had previously been a normal cough became low and hoarse, resembling a dog's bark. She immediately alerted her mother.
被吓醒后，女孩跑去告诉妈妈。妈妈立即拿起手机搜索“咳嗽像狗叫”，结果让她后背发凉：孩子可能患上了儿童急性喉炎，严重时可窒息致死！她不敢耽搁，带着两个孩子直奔襄阳市妇幼保健院儿科急诊。
After searching online for information about a barking cough, the mother learned that the child might be suffering from acute laryngitis, a condition that can lead to severe airway obstruction in young children. The family immediately took him to the pediatric emergency department of Xiangyang Maternal and Child Health Hospital.
接诊医生介绍，孩子入院时声音嘶哑、吸气性喉鸣明显，喉部黏膜已出现水肿，确诊为急性喉炎。
医院立即给予雾化吸入、减轻水肿等治疗，病情很快得到控制。“如果再晚一些，气道可能被完全堵塞，后果不堪设想。”
Doctors confirmed the diagnosis and began treatment at once, including nebulized therapy and medication to reduce airway swelling. The boy's condition stabilized quickly.
"Had the family delayed seeking treatment, his airway could have become completely blocked, which might have been life-threatening," the attending physician said.
为何急性喉炎如此凶险？
医生介绍，婴幼儿喉腔狭窄（仅4-5毫米），黏膜组织疏松，一旦发炎水肿，哪怕肿胀1毫米，也会导致气道严重受阻，引发呼吸困难甚至窒息。
Doctors explained that acute laryngitis can be particularly dangerous in young children because their airways are narrow and the surrounding tissue is prone to swelling. Even a small amount of inflammation can significantly restrict airflow, causing breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, suffocation.
急性喉炎多见于6个月至3岁婴幼儿，冬春季节高发，起病急、进展快，6小时内是黄金干预窗口。
Acute laryngitis is most common in children between 6 months and 3 years of age and occurs more frequently during the winter and spring months. The condition often develops rapidly, making early recognition and treatment especially important.
家长如何快速识别？
牢记以下三个“致命信号”：
▌犬吠样咳嗽
咳嗽声像小狗叫，呈“空空空”声，夜间平躺后往往突然加重；
▌声音嘶哑且进行性加重
短时间内声音变得沙哑，严重时说不出话，与普通感冒的轻微嘶哑不同；
▌吸气性喉鸣和呼吸困难
孩子吸气时喉咙发出尖利哨子声，同时出现鼻翼扇动、锁骨上窝或肋间隙凹陷。
医生强调，一旦孩子出现上述任一症状，尤其是犬吠样咳嗽，不要犹豫、不要等天亮，需立即就医。送医途中可让孩子保持坐立或半卧位，安抚情绪，避免哭闹加重喉头水肿。
