On Thursday, the hashtag "diapers contain toxic substances" topped the trending chart on China's social media platform Weibo, triggering widespread public concern.
The uproar followed consumer complaints that infants developed persistent diaper rash and, in some cases, skin breakdown after using certain diaper brands. Symptoms subsided notably after the products were discontinued.
To verify these allegations, the Economic Information Daily commissioned independent testing of randomly selected baby diapers from multiple brands. Laboratory results detected formamide — a toxic solvent — in products from Huggies, Beaba Baby, and Babycare.
formamide /fɔːˈmæmɪd/ n.
Medical testing facilities also found traces of the substance in the blood and urine of some infants. In a striking self-experiment, a reporter from the newspaper wore one diaper overnight and saw their blood formamide levels nearly double.
Formamide can be absorbed through the skin. Chronic low-level exposure may trigger developmental birth defects, and the substance poses particular danger to pregnant women and infants, potentially leading to reproductive impairment and chronic liver and kidney damage.
On the same day, the three brands issued formal responses.
Beaba Baby, through its customer service channel, released an official statement saying it had immediately activated emergency protocols. The company has commissioned a comprehensive re-test by an independent authority and is conducting a full supply-chain traceability review. It emphasized that formamide is a strictly controlled hazardous substance and is prohibited from entering its production supply chain.
Huggies, owned by Kimberly-Clark (China) Co Ltd, said that testing by an accredited third-party laboratory found no formamide in its diapers, and that all products meet China's national safety standards.
Babycare stated that all its diapers comply with current national regulations. Although Chinese standards do not set specific limits for formamide, the company said it had proactively tested its products under the EU REACH regulation's SVHC framework, with all results returning "not detected". The company also noted that it has not received any official notice of non-compliance from market regulators.
