More than a decade after her older brother died in a car accident, a young woman in China has finally gained access to his personal password-protected portal on QQ, and discovered a digital archive of affection she never knew existed.
The woman, identified only as Wenwen, took to social media earlier this month to ask for help. Her brother had passed away when she was very young, and she had never been able to add him as a friend on QQ, China's OG messaging platform. For years, she had tried intermittently to unlock his personal Qzone, a feature similar to a blog or scrapbook.
Each attempt met the same barrier: a security question that read, "How far is forever?"
Her plea quickly drew widespread attention online. Internet users offered suggestions, and, with their guidance, Wenwen contacted Tencent's customer support and successfully recovered the password.
Upon logging in, she found the answer: "One day more than waiting."
Inside the brother's Qzone, Wenwen found a digital time capsule of his thoughts and memories. One folder labeled "Most Beloved Sisters" stood out. The folder contained photos of Wenwen and her twin sister.
Wenwen, born in 2002, was just 10 when her father and brother — 14 years her senior — both died in a traffic accident on their way to work. She recalled that before he left, her brother gave her and her twin sister each a red string bracelet and told them never to take it off. In photos provided by the police after the crash, she saw that he was wearing a similar bracelet.
Her mother, devastated by the loss, saw her hair turn grey overnight. She threw herself into work to raise her two daughters, who went on to graduate from university and are now both pursuing postgraduate studies.
Wenwen also browsed through years of messages left by his friends. One wrote, "I dreamed about him again. I miss him so much." Another left a note as recently as 2025. "They still remember him after all this time," Wenwen said. "He was someone who valued friendship deeply."
In the end, a small lock screen and a familiar ID became a channel for grief, remembrance, and reunion. Browsing through a departed loved one's digital presence, many observed, feels like walking through time with them once more.
