A new film directed by Stephen Chow, Kung Fu Soccer, has triggered widespread controversy among South Korean netizens over its portrayal of an opposing team named the "Pear Blossom Team", with many accusing the film of denigrating Korean football team.
The team is depicted as employing underhanded tactics — tripping opponents and feigning injuries to manipulate referees — while players are shown wearing coloured contact lenses and touching up makeup during matches.
The name "Pear Blossom" has also been interpreted by some Korean viewers as a reference to Ewha Womans University, one of South Korea's most prestigious women's universities.
Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University publicly criticised the film on social media, alleging that it contains "many scenes belittling Korean women's football" and objecting to the portrayal of the team's "foul play", the players' appearances, and the use of "broken Korean" for comedic effect.
In response, many Chinese netizens have dismissed the backlash, arguing that the "Pear Blossom Team" is a purely fictional, cartoonish antagonist and that Korean viewers should not take it personally.
Legal experts have weighed in on the controversy, clarifying that the film's depiction does not constitute infringement. Lawyer Li Zhenwu of Shanghai Lizhen Law Firm cited China's Civil Code, which states that literary and artistic works are not liable if they do not target specific real individuals, even if certain plot points coincidentally resemble reality.
Li stressed that creative freedom is legally protected as long as it does not involve defamation of identifiable real persons, and the Kung Fu Soccer setting clearly falls within this legal framework.
