An elderly man whose seven gourds turned a historic Shaoxing neighborhood into a social-media pilgrimage site has put the gourds back on the vine, six days after cutting them down in response to overwhelming crowds.
Chen Jin'ao, known online as "Gourd Grandpa", and his wife Shen Hualing rehung the gourds on Friday at Shusheng Guli, a scenic spot in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, according to video circulating on social media and confirmation from local staff. The couple used a clothes-drying pole to lift the gourds back into place. Scenic-area staff said the rehanging happened around noon, when visitor numbers were low.

The community said it was Chen's own decision and that it did not immediately know his reason. Tang Liying, a community official, told media that the community fully respected the elderly man's decision and cared more about his and his wife's physical and mental health than about online traffic.
Chen later told Shao Xing News that visitors kept coming, some from Beijing, Guangdong and Shanghai, and many were visibly disappointed to find the vines empty. "When people come from so far away and cannot see the gourds, we feel bad about it," Chen said. He described the decision to cut them down as unwilling, saying the couple had been frightened by the sheer number of visitors.
