Heartwarming notices at the canteen of Fuyang Normal University in Anhui province have drawn widespread praise online as the new semester begins.

These simple yet warm notices have been posted at multiple canteen serving windows, reading: "Dear students, if you are going through financial difficulties, you may have your meals here first and pay later when your situation improves. We are willing to look after you just as your parents would."

This thoughtful assistance stems from canteen staff's years of close observation that some students may face temporary financial hardship and struggle to afford meals. The service also applies to those who arrive without their meal cards or with dead phone batteries, sparing them the awkwardness of being unable to pay.

To address these situations, the university rolled out the "eat first, pay later" initiative for the new semester. The process involves no registration, no supporting documents, and no public disclosure — students only need to briefly inform canteen staff before eating, and settle the payment at a later time, with their dignity and privacy fully protected.

Moreover, the university has built a coordinated support system. Canteen staff will report students with unusual dining patterns to the relevant departments for targeted assistance. Half-portion dishes, one-yuan budget meals, and free soup are also provided.

Similar considerate dining support practices have also been launched at many other Chinese universities, offering a soft safety net for young learners.

Nanjing University of Science and Technology, located in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, has adhered to offering financial aid to impoverished students by putting money into their meal cards while protecting their anonymity for 10 years, with over 41,000 students benefiting from the program to date.

After conducting research into dining expenses in the school canteen and its surroundings, the university has set criteria and grants subsidies to students who dine at campus canteens more than 60 times per month yet spend less than 750 yuan in total.

For example, if a student spends only 600 yuan on canteen meals in a month, the university will top up his or her meal card by 150 yuan to bring the total up to meet the standard.

"We hope every student can have a daily food budget of at least 25 yuan at campus canteens," said a university staff member. "It is not just about having enough to eat — they should also be able to eat well."
