A shop owner in Foshan, Guangdong province, got an unexpected helping hand from his landlord after falling about half a month behind on rent.
The tenant was due to pay on Aug 23 but missed the date because school was starting and his family's cash flow was tight. When the landlord came to check, he bought a grilled sausage at the shop, then scanned a payment code and transferred 20,000 yuan to the tenant.
The tenant was stunned. The landlord told him to use the money for his children's school costs and said the rent could wait and would be lowered.
The two have known each other for years: the tenant has rented the shop for six or seven years and once lived as neighbors with the landlord. The landlord said he trusted the tenant because he had always paid rent on time and never delayed a single day.
When praised online as a "good landlord", he shrugged it off. "Life is hard for everyone. If you can help someone, help them," he said. The tenant said the money left him warm inside and that he would work harder to improve his business.
