A viral online discussion in China has reignited the question of whether the language we speak shapes our personalities, with many users sharing how they feel different when switching between languages.

Some say speaking Chinese makes them more reserved and restrained in expressing emotions, while English brings out a more outgoing and enthusiastic side. Vietnamese, they say, has a distinct Southeast Asian flavor, while Cantonese sounds immediately gentle and warm.

No definitive research has established a direct causal link between language and personality. However, existing studies suggest that language can influence cognition and emotional expression within different cultural contexts.

Research suggests that when bilinguals interact with people from different cultures, the personality traits they display, when speaking the language that is tied to that culture, may align with their perceptions of the typical personality associated with that culture. This reflects cultural adaptation rather than the language itself "reshaping" their personalities.
