If you've ever felt that neither selfies nor photos taken by others quite capture how you really look, you're not alone. When it comes to how accurately different forms of viewing represent your appearance, the mirror may come closest, followed by seeing yourself in motion through others' eyes, while photographs can sometimes look the least familiar.

Part of the reason lies in how the brain processes visual information. It automatically constructs a three-dimensional perception of the world from two-dimensional visual input, whereas a camera captures a flat, two-dimensional image. This difference helps explain why photos can look different from how you perceive yourself in real life.

The brain also uses its memory of the colors of familiar objects and scenes to compensate for changes in lighting, while a camera records the color cast present under the particular lighting conditions.

In most cases, a mirror produces a virtual image that is the same size as you but reversed from left to right. Still, no reflective surface provides a perfectly faithful reproduction. A mirror has limitations in reflectivity and surface quality, while your brain also interprets and processes the image it sees, meaning that even a mirror may not show you exactly as others see you.

Stand in front of a mirror and act out a little solo performance. Keep your expressions lively and natural, and let your eyes move casually up and down. Take a look at what you really look like when you're in motion — that's basically how others see you in real life.

You can also record yourself using a camera or your phone's rear camera, keeping it at an appropriate distance. Watch yourself working, doing housework, or exercising. Chances are, that's also pretty close to how other people see you.
