Housed at the Shaanxi History Museum, this exquisite gilt-silver flask is a Tang Dynasty (618-907) masterpiece. Its flattened, rounded body mimics the traditional leather waterskins of northern nomadic tribes, while both sides feature a dynamic dancing horse crafted in repousse relief, shown raising its head, swishing its tail, and holding a wine cup in its mouth.
This motif originates from court entertainments popular during the Xuanzong reign (712-756), where trained horses danced to music during banquets and offered cups to wish the emperor longevity. Blending nomadic utility with Tang court culture, the vessel showcases remarkable metalworking skills and the vibrant cultural synthesis of the Tang era.
