A report of tiger tracks has prompted authorities in Jilin province to issue safety warnings. On Wednesday, Jilin Agricultural Science and Technology University told students to return to their dormitories early and avoid staying outside at night.
The tracks were reported near Shajiagou Reservoir, about 10 km from the Zuojia campus of the university. The campus lies deep in the Zuojia Nature Reserve, surrounded by mountains and far from urban areas.
Zuojia town government staff said residents reported tiger tracks near the reservoir on Tuesday night. Officials immediately notified village and community leaders and posted warnings in local group chats. Town leaders and forestry station staff also inspected the area.
Residents were advised to limit outings, travel in groups when necessary, and stay indoors at night. "It is a wild animal, and we don't know where it came from. Northeast China is home to wild Amur tigers," an official said.
The Changyi District Forestry and Animal Husbandry Bureau said Shajiagou has not been a tiger habitat and no tiger traces had been reported there for decades. It warned that tigers can attack people and urged anyone who spots one to call police immediately.
The university said the tracks were found about 10 km from campus and posed no immediate threat. It has increased patrols, closed the gate to the rear mountain, and kept existing fencing between the campus and the mountain. Teaching remains normal.
Amur tigers in China are mainly found in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces. Once near extinction due to a lack of wild prey and other factors, their numbers have recovered since the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park was piloted in 2017 and formally established in 2021.
Latest monitoring data from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration show that wild Amur tigers in the park rose from 27 in 2017 to 72, while Amur leopards rose from 42 to 115.
September is a period when Amur tigers expand their range. Young tigers born in recent years have grown up and are seeking new territories.
As summer turns to autumn, wild boar, roe deer and other ungulates begin migrating in groups, scattering food sources in the mountains. Tigers therefore roam farther to store energy for winter and are more likely to enter areas at the edge of human activity.

Stay calm. Do not turn your back or run. These actions can trigger an attack.
If a tiger faces you but does not attack, only stares or growls, do not turn and run. Face it, back away slowly, and move quickly after it is out of sight.
If a tiger tries to approach and attack, enter a house or car, or climb a tree if possible. If safe, try to scare it off with fire, loud shouting, or banging metal.
If a tiger stops attacking and the victim is still conscious, lie still. Futile resistance may provoke it and make things worse.
If a tiger knocks a person down and continues attacking, protect the neck first and fight back with any available tool.
