Police in Wuhu, Anhui province, have recovered a nightstand containing gold and platinum jewelry and bank deposit receipts inside after it was accidentally thrown away during a move.

A Wuhu resident surnamed Li, who called the police after discovering the loss, reported the case at about 9 pm on Tuesday. She said the family had moved into an apartment in Yijiang district on Sunday. During the move, her 20-year-old daughter accidentally broke the top of the nightstand. Fearing a scolding from her father, the daughter discussed it with her mother, and they decided to quietly discard the damaged furniture.

Two days later, while unpacking, Li suddenly remembered that all the family's valuables were stored in the discarded nightstand. After searching unsuccessfully, she called the police.

Officers confirmed the missing items included two gold necklaces weighing over 150 grams in total, a gold bracelet of more than 60 grams, a platinum necklace of over 160 grams — totaling more than 370 grams of precious metals — and bank deposit receipts worth over 1.9 million yuan, which was described as the family's savings over many years.

Using surveillance footage from the residential compound, police traced the nightstand. Although damaged, it remained structurally intact and had reuse value. A cleaner had not disposed of it as rubbish but instead moved it to a convenience service station near the compound's square for safekeeping.

Police, together with family members and a locksmith, opened the facility and found the nightstand. All valuables were successfully returned, with the jewelry and deposit receipts intact.
