A 60-centimeter "super-long egg tart" has gone viral in China, with the oversized pastry, dubbed the "behemoth of egg tarts", drawing long queues at multiple stores.
Chen, a manager at a food factory in Dongxihu district, Wuhan, Hubei province, said the product's popularity stems not from a revolutionary taste but from its strong social and emotional appeal. Its exaggerated elongated shape makes it particularly photogenic and well suited for social media posts. Young buyers share pictures on WeChat Moments and other platforms, generating free publicity for stores. "Eating one alone and sharing one with friends are completely different experiences," Chen said.
One outlet said the tart is priced at 16.8 yuan, with a limit of five per person. It is best consumed within two days. Because some stores cannot keep up with demand, customers may have to queue for two to three hours, while resale prices have risen to 56.8 yuan each.
A medical institution noted that, based on its volume and common recipes, one such tart is roughly equivalent to six to eight regular egg tarts. A standard egg tart contains about 150 to 200 kilocalories, meaning a single super-long version could easily exceed 1,000 kilocalories, close to the energy content of one or even two meals.
The institution advised several groups to limit or avoid the trend, including people with poorly controlled blood sugar, high blood lipids, fatty liver disease or cardiovascular disease, as well as those with gastrointestinal problems or who are trying to lose weight. It also advised people with a traditional Chinese medicine "phlegm-dampness" constitution to avoid eating too much. Children are likewise advised to limit their intake, as frequent consumption of sugary foods may encourage a preference for sweet flavors.
