A traditional Chinese folk dance move has gone viral online, with related videos surpassing 600 million views and celebrities and influencers joining the trend.
The move, known as shanshenbu, a traditional Chinese folk dance-style dodge-step, comes from a video in which Professor Zhao Tiechun and others teach the Anhui Flower Drum Lantern Dance. Recently rediscovered by netizens, its playful movements have inspired a wave of imitation videos and other creative adaptations. Other movements from the same dance, including "Langzi kicks the ball", have also been rediscovered and imitated.

"It was suddenly rediscovered by the public," Professor Zhao noted. "The move carries the characteristics of traditional Chinese folk culture while also appealing to a broad audience. People find it fun, meme-worthy, humorous and professional, which has sparked their interest. Such playful reinterpretation is a form of user-driven creativity."
Feng Taixin, a designated inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage, said shanshenbu is a basic technique of the Anhui Flower Drum Lantern Folk Dance, which originated in areas along the Huaihe River. Other movements, such as "Langzi kicks the ball", are also part of the dance.
