“上班被叫微信名字说不清楚”引热议,网友:微信名是hybb,领导:火药宝宝在吗?
先来一个“灵魂拷问”:你的微信昵称,敢不敢让老板大声念出来?
A topic of having your WeChat nickname read aloud by your boss has sparked widespread discussion online, with users sharing awkward moments when their online identities collided with real-world situations.
Why does a simple WeChat nickname trigger such intense embarrassment? The answer lies in the mismatch between private and public identities.
Sociologist Erving Goffman in his 1956 book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life proposed the influential front stage / backstage framework: The front stage is where we perform for an audience and manage impressions, while the backstage is where we can step out of the role presented to others.
Media scholar Joshua Meyrowitz argued in 1985's No Sense of Place that electronic media can blur the boundaries between previously separate social settings by changing how information is distributed and who has access to it. In this sense, a WeChat nickname offers a small but vivid example of how identities that once belonged to different social contexts can suddenly collide.
Aleks Krotoski, a broadcaster, journalist and social psychologist, said on BBC Learning English's 6 Minute English:
"Online we have this extraordinary opportunity to explore different aspects of ourselves through primarily text-based communication, by manipulating language and becoming wordsmiths ourselves. Your Twitter handle will have a 'you' that is probably different from a 'you' that you share if you have a Facebook account."
