A man who vanished for three months after falling for an online scam has been found in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Beijing police said.
The man's brother reported him missing after he traveled to the capital on the strength of an online claim that he had won more than 90 million yuan. After arriving, he failed to meet the supposed contact and ran out of travel money.
Officers arranged his trip home from Beijing West Railway Station, but he slipped away again.
Investigators later learned from an intermediary that the man, surnamed Zhao, had been introduced to herd sheep in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia autonomous region. A special team travelled to Chifeng and recovered only his ID card. They interviewed over 100 herders and drove more than 1,000 km before tracking him to Ongniud Banner.
With no sheep-herding experience, he had wandered off, lost his phone, become disoriented and collapsed from hunger. A kind villager rescued him and took him in. He stayed and worked in local farming. Officers have now confirmed Zhao is safe and has been escorted back to his family.
Police have reminded the public not to trust online high-value prize scams and to seek help from officers promptly when in trouble.
