During China's National Day holiday, young travelers packed their suitcases with a new kind of travel essential. Known in Chinese as "cipaoyi", it is cheap, photo-ready clothing designed to be worn once. They sell for as little as 10 yuan and rarely exceed a few dozen yuan.
Usually stylish and brightly colored, they are especially suited to photos and special occasions. For young consumers, they offer a way to follow trends without adding much financial pressure.

Lin Xiao, a woman in her 20s, bought three vacation dresses for under 80 yuan before a trip to Dali, Yunnan province. "White and bright-colored dresses look best by Erhai Lake, but I'd never wear them to work," she said. "Buying expensive ones would be a waste."
Social media has accelerated the trend. The most typical use of these clothes is travel. Shoppers buy from e-commerce platforms, clearance sellers, low-price stores, and secondhand platforms such as Xianyu, an Alibaba-backed secondhand marketplace.

Most of these clothes are made from polyester, chiffon, denim or lace, and usually cost under 50 yuan. Stitching is often rough, and garments can tear easily, lose shape after washing, or give off a pungent smell when unpacked.
Zhou Ming, a shop owner selling photo-ready dresses on e-commerce platforms for years, said monthly sales top 10,000 items, with bestsellers priced between 20 and 50 yuan. "Orders surge through short videos and livestreams, and styles change very fast," he said. "Repeat purchases are less than 10 percent."
The core buyers are mostly women aged 18 to 30, including students in smaller cities and young office workers in major cities. Before long holidays, orders rise about two weeks in advance. Some customers buy several pieces at once, and then decide which to keep or return.
Zhou said the industry's return rate generally runs between 30 and 50 percent, driven by inaccurate sizing, obvious color differences, and poor fabric quality.
To control costs, sellers often adopt several tactics. One is to price items extremely low and rely on volume. Another is to state on product pages that items are not eligible for seven-day no-reason returns or that only exchanges are allowed.

Cai Shangwei, director of Sichuan University's Cultural Industry Research Center, described cipaoyi as a disposable consumer product in the apparel sector. It appeals to short-term needs with a promise of new, clean, and low-cost clothing. But one-time beauty should not come at the expense of skin health.
Modern supply chains and social media culture have created demand for such clothing. Many of the negative issues associated with it are common problems in the textile industry, he noted, rather than unique to throwaway outfits.
Still, because the clothes touch the skin directly, safety matters. Substandard dyes, formaldehyde residue, or improper pH levels can trigger contact dermatitis and allergies, Cai warned.
He called for stronger enforcement against merchants who sell refurbished or defective clothes as new, better sanitation labeling for secondhand clothing, and an end to using "disposable" labels to evade quality inspections. All clothing sold in China should follow national textile safety standards, with particular scrutiny on garments that come into direct contact with skin.
