A tourist from Guizhou province has complained online after his car ran out of fuel just 20 meters from a gas station at a highway service area, forcing him to pay 350 yuan for a tow truck to move the vehicle — even though he offered to sign and fingerprint for a small amount of fuel in a bucket.
Huang said he forgot to refuel before entering the highway around midnight on Saturday. After parking at the Qianxi service area to use the restroom, his car would not restart — the fuel was gone and the automatic transmission was stuck in P gear. He asked gas station staff to let him borrow a bucket for a small amount of fuel, but the staff refused, citing rules against selling loose fuel and surveillance cameras.
Other drivers tried to help jump-start the car, but failed, and his insurance company said it does not provide emergency assistance on highways, so he called highway rescue.
A tow truck arrived and moved the car to the gas station. Huang said the 20-meter tow cost 350 yuan and took over an hour. He said he posted online only to remind drivers to watch their fuel gauges on highways.
A gas station staff member said selling loose fuel is prohibited, but drivers who run out of fuel can borrow a bucket after completing registration. The station said only one employee was on duty that night, newly hired and unfamiliar with procedures, and apologized for the inconvenience. Vehicles that run out of fuel within 2 kilometers of the gas station can borrow a bucket, refuel, and return it with the owner's signature and registration with public security authorities.
