Hong Kong police have arrested two men and recovered all the gold stolen in a theft case, a senior police officer said on Thursday.
At a press briefing, the chief inspector of the Kwun Tong District Crime Squad in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said police received a report early on Wednesday from a man who had checked into a Kwun Tong hotel with a friend. The man reported that 30 kilograms of gold nuggets worth about HK$30 million had been replaced in his suitcase with eight bottles of fabric softener, which roughly weighed the same as the gold. The man's friend had also subsequently disappeared.
Investigators believe the missing friend was the mastermind behind the theft. He allegedly arranged for two accomplices to purchase the fabric softener in advance. When the victim briefly left the hotel room to smoke downstairs, the suspect opened the door for the two men to enter and carry out the swap, which took just two minutes.
At noon on Wednesday, police arrested one suspect in Tai Po, Hong Kong, and took him to a hotel in the district, where they recovered the stolen gold. Meanwhile, another suspect was intercepted at the Lo Wu control point while attempting to leave Hong Kong.
The two arrested men, aged 27 and 41, are Chinese mainland residents and are being detained for investigation. Police confirmed that the alleged mastermind had left Hong Kong, adding that they were actively pursuing him.
