A young couple in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, have won widespread praise online for a "four-no" wedding that stripped away almost every traditional ritual: no bride-fetching ceremony, no wedding cars, no emcee, and no professional stylist or photographer.
The bride, surnamed Zhu, is a post-95s woman from Xianxiang township in Ningbo's Yinzhou district. Her husband, surnamed Wang, is from Taizhou. Both work in Shanghai.
9月12日在男方老家台州办了一场婚礼;
They held two banquets. One in Wang's hometown on Sept 12 and another at a cultural hall in Zhu's home village on Sept 26. Neither of which featured any of the trappings of a conventional Chinese wedding.
A message displayed on the LED screen set the tone: "Thank you all for coming to our wedding banquet. If there's not enough at your table, feel free to eat at the next one. There is no ceremony. We'll start the meal as soon as everyone is here."
The only formal moment came when Zhu's father took the stage for 41 seconds to thank guests and wish them a happy Mid-Autumn Festival before declaring the banquet open.
Zhu did her own makeup that morning, handled her own outfit changes during the meal, and bought a single new Chinese-style wedding dress.
For the Xianxiang banquet, the LED screen, sound system, and microphones were rented, while all decorations were bought on Taobao and assembled by the couple themselves.
Zhu explained their choices bluntly. Both she and her husband are introverts who dislike big, noisy occasions. More importantly, they did not want to impose on others, exhaust themselves, or wear out their parents.
Zhu had seen too many cases of parents running themselves ragged and falling ill. "If we tire out our parents to the point of sickness just to hold a wedding, that's just not worth it," she said.
The couple did splurge on one thing: a pre-wedding photo shoot in Lijiang, Yunnan province, set against the backdrop of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
"Wedding videos are usually never watched again, but photos taken somewhere I love mean a lot to me," Zhu said. A montage of their Lijiang photos played on a loop at both banquets, which was the one piece of ritual they kept.
While they stripped back the ceremony, they went all out on the food. The Xianxiang banquet cost over 70,000 yuan in ingredients alone, with Zhu's father's chef friend doing the cooking. Dishes included garlic king crab, millet with sea cucumber, and poached black gold abalone.
Guests were further surprised by red envelopes: each attendee at the Sept 26 dinner received 200 yuan from the couple, and those who had given gift money received an additional 100 yuan. The couple handed out 60,000 to 70,000 yuan in total.
"In Xianxiang, the custom is to give guests cigarettes, but I figured many people don't smoke anymore, so a red envelope is more practical," Zhu said.
Lu, Zhu's aunt, said she was taken aback but delighted. "The food was genuinely excellent, probably the best banquet I've ever had," she said.
Her bemused praise captures the essence of the wedding: money spent where it mattered most, while the couple avoided tedious formalities, guests received real value, and parents were spared the strain.
