A Chinese women's clothing store has sparked widespread outrage after a product listing on its page stated that a garment was made from "cat fur".
Screenshots circulating online show that the brown patterned fabric of the item was labeled as "100% Chinese Li Hua cat fur". The product description further claimed that the brown color was achieved using "fur from the back of a Chinese Li Hua cat".
On Saturday, the store issued an apology.
It stated that the product was custom-made by the brand through a partner factory, and that the purchase order explicitly required fox fur, never cat fur. The item had not been officially launched and was urgently removed from the platform before the controversy gained traction online.
Whether selling cat or dog fur products on e-commerce platforms violates regulations, and what consequences merchants might face, was addressed by Lin Xiaoming, a partner at a Sichuan law firm.
Lin explained that China currently has no legislation explicitly banning the production of clothing from domestic cat or dog fur. However, under the Animal Epidemic Prevention Law, cat and dog hides qualify as animal-derived products, and their processing, distribution, and sale require quarantine declaration. Without proper quarantine, agricultural authorities can impose fines proportional to the goods' value.

Furthermore, if the fur originates from stolen or killed pets, those involved could face theft charges if the value meets legal thresholds. Knowingly purchasing, processing, or selling stolen goods could constitute the crime of concealing or disguising criminal proceeds.
Lin also noted that e-commerce platforms, guided by public morals, classify cat and dog fur products as prohibited items. Violations can result in product removal, deposit deductions, store suspension, or permanent expulsion.
Merchants must adhere to legal boundaries while also respecting public sentiment and moral standards, he said.
