A staff member said cultural relics experts had inspected the beam and found no damage, and that police were handling the case. The Hunyuan County Public Security Bureau said it was investigating and processing the matter.
An earlier video showed the man jumping up, grabbing the beam with both hands and starting pull-ups. Some online users accused him of damaging a cultural relic.
The Xuankong Temple is built into the cliffs of Cuiping Peak on Hengshan Mountain. First built in the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), more than 1,500 years ago, it is one of China's rare surviving temples where Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism coexist and intertwine.
It has precarious rock above and a deep valley below, with pavilions that appear to hang in midair. It is regarded as a rare masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture. In 1982, the State Council designated it a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level.
