An airport in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, has earned praise for selling ibuprofen tablets individually for just 2 yuan, offering passengers in need of pain relief a more affordable option.

According to Jimu News, a woman surnamed Zhao posted online on Monday that she experienced menstrual pain while waiting to board a flight at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. With no painkillers on hand, she followed a convenience store employee's advice to seek help at the airport's medical emergency station.

After asking whether she had taken any other medication that day and whether she had any contraindications, staff recommended that she buy a single ibuprofen tablet. They also reminded her to keep warm and drink warm fluids.

Airport staff said a box of 24 ibuprofen tablets costs nearly 40 yuan, making individual sales a more practical option for passengers who need only a few doses. The tablets are sold for 2 yuan each, and staff provide medication guidance and keep purchase records.

The service has drawn praise online, with some users calling for other airports to follow suit. Others questioned whether selling medicines outside their original packaging was legal.

Lin Feiran, a lawyer at King & Capital Law Firm, said Chinese regulations do not require medicines to be sold only in full boxes or bottles. If the station operates as part of a licensed medical institution, dispensing individual tablets as part of emergency care is generally lawful, Lin said. Ibuprofen is an over-the-counter medicine, and staff also provided instructions on its use.
