The most popular emoji was "loudly crying face" 😭 last year, according to new usage data from Google. It has become an all-purpose emoji deployed when something is so funny, emotional or embarrassing you could cry.

“‌放声大哭”表情😭在排行榜上一举超越了2024年的前三大热门表情符号:“笑翻”🤣(rolling on the floor laughing)、 “笑哭”😂(face with tears of joy)和 “红色爱心”❤️(red heart)。

"Loudly crying face" 😭 reached the top by leapfrogging "rolling on the floor laughing"🤣, "face with tears of joy" 😂 and "red heart" ❤️ on the leaderboard. A big reason: young people decided the other emojis were overused, according to linguists and a New York Times analysis of Reddit posts.

The new data comes from an anonymous sample of 665 million emojis used by people worldwide on Gboard, a Google keyboard built into most devices using Android, the most widely used operating system. Because the data lacks demographic details, The New York Times turned to Reddit forums for insight on how different age groups use emojis.

The emotions people express often stay the same, but the emojis they use to communicate them evolve.

💀

"Skull" 💀, for example, indicating someone was dead from laughter, briefly outpaced "loudly crying face" 😭 among teenagers, but then its use rapidly declined.

"Wilted flower"🥀, for instance, is often used to signify sadness or heartbreak, and was the emoji gaining popularity fastest last year, according to the Google data, becoming the 93rd most used. Some people adopted it in place of "broken heart" 💔.

"Moai" 🗿, which ranked 33rd in 2025, up from 482nd in 2021, has recently had a meteoric rise. Young people often use the Moai statue to indicate a deadpan response or a raised eyebrow, and on Reddit it is used in fits and starts by Gen Alpha but hardly at all by others.

When people communicate digitally instead of in person, nonverbal indicators of meaning and emotion — through facial expressions, gestures or tone of voice — are lost. Emojis fill in. They also signal in-group belonging, researchers said.

Groups that feel marginalized are often most innovative in developing their own online language, said Adam Aleksic, a linguist. "Usually the more a group is a minority, the more they have reason to differentiate themselves," he said.

Teenagers, particularly teenage girls, have always been at the forefront of linguistic change, according to Sali A. Tagliamonte, a professor of linguistics at the University of Toronto. Among her five children, her daughters use emojis but her sons don't, she said.

Women tend to have more social ties and a bigger emotional vocabulary, researchers said. And as people age, their language becomes more stable.

For the past few years, at least, the 10 most-used emojis have remained the same, according to Google. Although there are more than 3,600 emojis, these 10 accounted for 36 percent of all emoji usage last year. Most swapped positions.
