Veteran actor Li Xuejian has moved audiences with a wordless performance during a TV gala marking the 90th anniversary of the Long March.
Li portrayed an elderly Red Army cooking squad leader carrying a lit lantern from darkness into light. Though his hearing and speech are impaired, Li took an active part in the performance, and his narration was recreated using AI digital technology.
The gala aired on CMG on Thursday. Marking the 90th anniversary of the Long March — the Red Army's strategic retreat from 1934 to 1936, a foundational episode in modern Chinese history — the program used AI to recreate historical moments.
Set against the Zunyi Conference in January 1935, Li's segment showed the Party and the Red Army at a turning point. Without a single line, he conveyed the journey from crisis and danger to a new situation through subtle changes in his eyes, expression and movements.
Rehearsals were conducted in writing. Director Yu Lei said the AI-generated narration was built from samples of Li's past performances and a voice actor's guidance, then adjusted over multiple rounds — slightly aged in tone but faithful to his delivery and emotion.
Li also helped design his look, adding a smoke-stained rough apron and insisting that the red star on his cap stay polished. He learned the full process of lighting the lantern, down to the oil and flint.
Li has battled cancer for more than 20 years. Despite losing his hearing and speech, he has continued acting, memorizing co-stars' lines in advance and reading their lips to judge timing. Li has said he wants to perform roles that stand the test of time and will perform "until I can't".
