A netizen recently shared online a photo of a newly purchased garment's composition label that listed 27 percent cong, Chinese for scallion, among its ingredients, setting off a lively discussion. The label also showed 8 percent wool, 29 percent nylon, and 36 percent polyester.
The shopper later said the seller attributed the entry to a labeling error, explaining that cong should have been jinyincongsi, or gold-and-silver metallic yarn.
Gold-and-silver metallic yarn is a decorative filament cut from PET plastic film, according to textile industry sources. It is used to add shine to stage costumes, hanfu and China-chic clothing, and is also used as gift-wrapping ties.
Under China's national standard for textile labels, such colloquial trade names should not be printed directly on composition labels.
Industry insiders say consumers need not panic when they see strange "ingredients" on labels, as many are trade names or the result of nonstandard factory labeling. They advise buying through official channels and checking with the seller or brand if a composition is unclear.
