Several Chinese universities are installing soundproof pods in their libraries to provide private space for voice-related activities without disturbing others.
At Renmin University of China, reading booths have been converted into soundproof pods, with reading equipment removed and desks, chairs, lighting, and ventilation upgraded.
The university also upgraded 78 pods at its Tongzhou campus, allowing entry via a physical campus card, virtual campus code, mobile NFC, or a dynamic door code.
Beihang University has introduced two-person discussion pods and single-person phone pods at its library.
The former supports group discussion and academic exchange, while the latter is intended for calls, interviews, and online meetings.
University of Science and Technology Beijing has adopted a compact, chair-free design for single-person pods aimed at short, voice-related uses.
They feature professional sound insulation, soft lighting for interviews and device operation, and independent quiet ventilation.
Zhejiang University Library has placed the pods at multiple locations across floors, making them easy to reach from different parts of the library.
They include independent ventilation, wireless charging panels, and sensor-controlled lighting that turns on automatically and supports stepless dimming.
Zhengzhou University has placed single-person pods in the first-floor hall, responding to students who need to take online interviews or practice spoken language.
The pods are equipped with lighting and power outlets to support online study and communication. Users book online and check in by scanning a QR code, with usage rules in place.
Chang'an University's AI study pods come in single- and multi-person versions. They are equipped with soundproof materials, fresh-air systems, power outlets, and smart touchscreens.
Onboard functions include AI academic navigation, intelligent Q&A, and a course-resource platform, enabling users to search the literature online and draw on AI assistance in research and writing.
Northeast Normal University has installed AI teaching-training pods in teaching buildings and libraries for pre-service teachers.
The pods can record micro-lessons and collect teaching data, while AI algorithms analyze verbal expression and teaching posture and generate diagnostic reports.
Henan Medical University offers single- and multi-person pods beside reading areas. They give students and faculty a dedicated place for recitation, small-group discussion, and online interviews.
Each pod is equipped with smart ventilation, reading lights, and charging sockets, and can be booked either online or on site.
The warmth of a university is reflected not only in its research output and rankings, but also in how it responds to students' everyday needs.
Rather than waiting for students to appeal repeatedly, it takes the initiative to notice changes in how they study and to fill gaps in campus services. That is what a truly student-centered approach looks like.
