The Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) is an international award jointly initiated by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, or UN-Habitat, and the Shanghai municipal government.
It aims to promote the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the localization of sustainable development efforts on a global scale and recognize cities that have achieved outstanding achievements in the field of sustainable development.
It also serves as a platform for the implementation of key areas of flagship projects of the UN-Habitat and the global urban monitoring framework.
Shanghai Award and the China Observance of 2023 World Cities Day were held in the municipality on Oct 28. He Lifeng, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice-premier attended the opening ceremony and awarded prizes to the first winning cities.
The first circle of the Shanghai Award was unveiled at this session of World Cities' Day. The winners are Australia's Brisbane, China's Fuzhou, Malaysia's George Town of Penang, Uganda's Kampala and Brazil's Salvador.
The design work by China Daily's New Vision Studio stood out in the global solicitation activities and was chosen as the logo for Shanghai Award. The studio also designed and produced the visual identity manual, trophies, medals and certificates for this award ceremony.
The logo design is presented as the image of a tree when viewed from above, symbolizing the idea that deep roots are necessary for a tree to grow. This design reflects the continuous exploration and deep commitment to global sustainable development.
The image, after abstract integration, can be deconstructed into three identical house-like shapes, reflecting the cosmic view of "one begets two; two begets three; three begets the myriad creatures".
The houses converging from different directions create a dynamic forward trend with color gradient from red to green symbolizing the transition from land to trees. The overall shape resembles a jade pendant, incorporating traditional Chinese elements and presenting a friendly and amicable international image for China.
As the first trophy for the Shanghai Award, the design embodies the concept of sustainability and cyclicality and continues the tree concept from the logo, extending it into a tall and flourishing tree. The cross-section of the tree trunk being the logo symbolizes how the concept of sustainable development grows stronger over time like tree rings.
