In his book Travels With Henry, veteran US journalist Richard Valeriani describes a scene in which Henry Kissinger, the national security advisor and later secretary of state to President Richard Nixon, walked in on an elaborate State Department meeting. Valeriani writes, "He would invariably ask, ‘Who are all these people?’ And then he would point out with some disdain, ‘I opened up China with five people.’"

The stomachache that had arrived early & the missing shirt
At the dawn on July 9, 1971, Kissinger was sitting with three other Americans on a Pakistani plane as it skirted the planet’s second-tallest peak before entering Chinese airspace in what’s known as Kissinger’s secret visit.
Part of the ruse to keep the visit truly secret was faking an upset stomach. On the last leg of a publicly-announced trip that included Vietnam, Thailand, India and Pakistan, Kissinger and his accompanying team told the world that he had to recuperate for several days in a hill station due to a stomachache. During this time, the Pakistanis, who had been acting as a major channel of communication between the Americans and the Chinese, transported Kissinger and his four-man group to an airport in Islamabad.
However, there is a twist to that story, said Winston Lord, Kissinger’s top aide in the 70s who was with him during the trip. "Ironically, Kissinger came down with a real stomachache in India, and covered this up as much as possible because he wanted to save his real illness until he arrived in Pakistan," he said.

In conversation with Mao and Zhou
Depicting the late Chinese premier Zhou Enlai as "equally at home in philosophical sweeps, historical analysis, tactical probing and light repartee", Kissinger clearly saw kindred spirit. And he detailed their meetings in 1971, some stretching for seven hours in one sitting, in the 2011 book On China, written to explain the conceptual way the Chinese think about problems of peace and war and international order.
"The Chinese don't think of negotiations as solving individual problems. They think that every solution is an admission ticket for another problem. They think in terms of processes… Hence Chinese diplomats consider continuity of relationships an important task and perhaps more important than formal documents," conceded Kissinger. "In this context, hospitality becomes an aspect of strategy."
Kissinger first met Mao in the afternoon of February 21, 1972, the first day the President Nixon and his entourage's arrival in Beijing. Impressing Kissinger with "the quality of being at the center of wherever he stood".
The Chinese chairman had a distinctive conversational style, typically initiating discussions with a question and then engaging in a Socratic dialogue to answer it, as per Kissinger's observation. Although initially puzzled by Mao's "elliptical comments" and "abstruse language," Kissinger swiftly recognized in him a strategic and pragmatic thinker who understood the importance of setting priorities.
❸
Chess VS Wei Qi
One place where Kissinger had tried to grasp the essence of what he dubbed "the Chinese realpolitik" was in playing the Chinese game Go, or Wei Qi. Invented in China more than 2500 years ago, the game is played between two opponents who try to defeat each other by encirclement, which Kissinger believes historically has been "the greatest strategic fear" for China, with its vast periphery.
"Chess produces single-mindedness, Wei Qi generates strategic flexibility," wrote Kissinger in his 2011 book On China. Kissinger shared the view with Nixon that moving to China was "not to collude against the Soviet Union but to give us a balancing position to use for constructive ends – to give each Communist power a stake in better relations with us." In other words, “maximum diplomatic flexibility” as Kissinger calls it.
Kissinger also found in Wei Qi an apt metaphor for the balance of power and the concept of linkage, "Multiple contests take place simultaneously in different regions of the board. The balance of forces shifts incrementally with each move," observed Kissinger.
Contrary to some Soviet experts' beliefs, Kissinger predicted that the US-China rapprochement would not further alienate the Soviet Union but rather provide an incentive for détente.
The Diplomacy of Dr. Kissinger
In 1940, less than two years after fleeing Nazi Germany, the 16-year-old Kissinger wrote an unsent letter to a young lady named Edith, who was also a recent Jewish immigrant from Furth, Kissinger's German hometown. In the letter, Kissinger, in the grip of an intense teenage crush and violent jealousy, advised her against a friendship with two other boys in their circle.
"I want to caution you against Kurt because of his wickedness, his utter disregard of any moral standards while he is pursuing his ambitions, and against Oppus because of his desire to dominate you ideologically and monopolize you physically… While concluding, may I reiterate again, that I would regret it very much if you were to ascribe purely selfish motives to my writing this letter…"
The Kissinger Rule
In 1950, Kissinger completed his renowned undergraduate thesis The Meaning of History: Reflections on Spengler, Toynbee, and Kant. At 383 pages, it has not only offered an impressive display of Kissinger's intellectual brilliance but has also gone down in history as the longest-ever thesis written by a Harvard senior. It prompted, perhaps not so surprisingly, the Harvard College to come up with "the Kissinger rule" limiting all future endeavors from its undergraduate students to about one-third of that length.
"Peace is therefore the noblest goal of human endeavor, the affirmation of the ultimacy of man’s moral personality," Kissinger wrote, referring to his study of Immanuel Kant, the man "who has influenced me the most".
On September 24, 1973, in addressing the UN General Assembly, Kissinger the newly-elected US Secretary of state said, "...what seemed utopian then looms as tomorrow’s reality; soon there will be no alternative. Our only choice is whether the world envisaged in the UN charter will come about as the result of our vision or of a catastrophe invited by our shortsightedness."
"Although Kissinger ceased to be much concerned with philosophy – almost all his writings after 1950 is essentially historical – he kept referring to Kant," said Ferguson. "By doing so he was trying to signal to the world that he's not a realist, but the world didn't want to listen."
❻
"Then I’ll read it…"
"Henry’s demand for excellence could have a chilling effect on people who worked for him," said Lord, recalling how Kissinger kept him working on a speech he was preparing for him, rejecting the first few drafts Lord had presented to him with the question "Is this best you can do?"
The Chinese version of Lord's book Kissinger on Kissinger, comprised of a number of riveting interviews Lord did with his mentor 2015 and 2016, has just hit shelves in China.
"That’s him – always welcoming debate and argumentation, even if it's against his own views. But it has to be rigorously presented and not sentimental or sloppy."
"This is the worst chess player in the world calling the best."
According to Ferguson, Kissinger stopped talking to him for three months after reading the draft of his 2015 biography, which covered Kissinger's years up to the eve of his appointment by Nixon as his national security advisor in January 1969. "He felt that the book was too revealing," said Ferguson.
In July 1972, after US chess grandmaster Bobby Fisher threatened to walk out on the symbolic world championship chess match with the title holder, Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union, Kissinger called up Fisher to persuade him to go. Kissinger, "a serious chess player in his youth" according to Ferguson, would opened the conversation by saying that "this is the worst chess player in the world calling the best one".
Around that time, he refused to play chess with Soviet ambassador to the US Anatoly Dobrynin, who called him "the only person who had learned to eat caviar with chopsticks", because "that would reveal too much about his personality and psychology", Kissinger told Ferguson.
❽
"Power is aphrodisiac"
During his 2013 China visit, Kissinger sat down to talk with students at Fudan University’s Center for American Studies.
According to his host, the center's director Wu Xinbo, a student joked that his name sounded like "kiss-girl", the 90-year-old answered by saying that "power is an aphrodisiac", paraphrasing Napoleon Bonaparte.
Reflecting on Napoleon's ultimate defeat, Kissinger remarked, "A man who has been used to command... finds it almost impossible to learn to negotiate because negotiation is an admission of finite power."
Lord shared an anecdote, emphasizing the performative nature of Kissinger's public image. Recalling a particular instance, Lord mentioned Kissinger taking an attractive journalist to dinner in a Paris restaurant immediately after a secret meeting with Le Duc Tho, his North Vietnamese counterpart involved in the negotiation of the Paris Accords.
❾
"Mixing wariness with co-dependence"
Walter Isaacson, the former editor of Time magazine and the author of the 1992 book Kissinger: A Biograph, characterized the relationship between Nixon and Kissinger as a complex interplay of wariness and codependence.
According to him, Nixon, restive at the potential publicity Kissinger might generate for himself, had been "merciless in toying with him on the issue (of who would go to China)" in the days leading up to the secret visit.
The president's conern wasn't unwarranted: Kissinger shot to international fame upon the revelation of the secret visit. And that fame continued to grow, after Nixon's February 1972 visit proved hugely successfully with the American public.
Towards the end of that year, Kissinger, recognizing the delicate nature of the matter, felt the need to contact Time magazine's managing editor-in-chief. He attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to have himself removed from the cover of the magazine. Kissinger ultimately shared the cover with Nixon in the January 1, 1973, issue, recognized as one of the co-Men of the Year.
Humor and self-deprecation
In March, 1973, Nixon and Kissinger negotiated with Zhou Enlai the release of Jack Downey, a CIA agent captured by the Chinese during the Korean War in 1952, on the ground that Downey's mother had just suffered a severe stroke and couldn't wait for long to see the return of her son.
"Flash forward two years, now Mr. Ford was the president and Downey’s mother was not only alive but was in very good health," said Lord, who helped to write a memo from Kissinger to Ford concerning the issue.
"Mr. President, we have a very serious problem with the Chinese and it's embarrassing," recalled Lord. "So we have three options now. Option one is for you to go public and apologize to the Chinese that Mrs. Downey hasn’t died; option two is to take Mr. Downey and send him back to China; option three is to get the CIA to go out and kill Mrs. Downy. In this way, we can restore our relations with the Chinese."
Ford, "a wonderful person but not always the quickest one" according to Lord, failed to recognize the intended humor. He read the memo, looked at Kissinger, and said with a serious face, "Henry, these are not good options."

Pattern of empathy
In his book, Ferguson, who sees "a pattern of empathy" in Kissinger's actions, tells how the young man, in a defeated Germany as a US army intelligence officer with power over enemy civilians, refused to simply stand with his parents "on the vengeful side", to use his words.
"Tome there is not only right or wrong but many shades in between…Real dilemmas are difficulties of the soul, provoking agonies, which you in your world of black and white can't even begin to comprehend," Kissinger wrote to his parents in July 1948.
"To me there is not only right or wrong but many shades in between…Real dilemmas are difficulties of the soul, provoking agonies, which you in your world of black and white can’t even begin to comprehend," Kissinger wrote to his parents in July 1948.
In the years leading to the signing of the Paris Peace Accords, which officially ended the Vietnam War, there were "protestors outside the White House gates at all times", said Lord.
"There was one young, idealistic protester who went on a serious hunger strike. And Kissinger went out secretly to talk to him, listened to his concerns, praised him for his idealism even though he disagreed," said Lord. "He did this purely out of compassion and with no media knowledge."
Later, Lord and his Chinese American wife took the young man to dinner with Kissinger, at one of Kissinger’s favorite Chinese restaurant.
In reflecting on the multifaceted life of Kissinger, it becomes apparent that he was a man of paradoxes, navigating the intricacies of diplomacy, politics, and intellect with a unique blend of wit and seriousness. Kissinger left an indelible mark on history; embodying the belief that diplomacy is not merely about solving problems but understanding the perpetual ebb and flow of relationships. As the world reflects on his legacy, it must grapple with the intricate dance between power, strategy, and compassion that defined the life of Henry Kissinger.
