A video shared by BMX rider Martin on Instagram on Wednesday morning, Paris time, shows the smashed side window of the van and police officers speaking to a member of the Australian delegation.

In a second video, Martin can be seen recovering some of the stolen gear, including a massage table and a helmet, after tracking down the bags at the base of a tree using an Airtag placed in the luggage.

The video shows the contents of the bag strewn across the grass, including Martin's gloves and chocolate wrappers, amid a sea of rubbish and discarded items.

“They ate your choccies,” a voice can be heard saying in the background.

While most of Martin's personal belongings were in his room, the thieves made away with his wallet, backpack, boots, and helmet among other items.

“Overall it didn't end up being too bad,” Martin wrote in the caption of the post. “It's unfortunate when people feel the need to do things like this.”

The incident appears to have taken place in Belgium.

Australia's chef de mission Anna Meares said it was unfortunate that the van had been broken into.

“As you can appreciate, when you're using sporting equipment and potentially you lose it this close to a competition it can be quite stressful, but his bikes are fine,” Meares said.

Meares said Martin's team and the Australian Olympic Committee were working to replace the stolen items as quickly as possible.

Martin, who became Australia's first BMX freestyle gold medallist in Tokyo in 2021, left Queensland last week ahead of the start of the Paris Olympics, where he will defend his title after a disappointing performance at the qualifiers in Budapest.

The break-in comes less than 48 hours after two members of Nine's Olympics broadcast team were seriously assaulted during an attempted robbery on Monday afternoon, Paris time.

The tech workers were walking back to their accommodation on the outskirts of Paris when a group of people attempted to snatch one of their bags and attacked the pair.

Authorities will deploy some 45,000 police and security forces, 20,000 private security staff, and 15,000 military personnel each day to protect the Olympics, which are expected to attract millions of visitors.
