Chinese fans boo table tennis champion Chen Meng, sparking furious online reaction at home
From: SCMP
It's possible the only person in the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles that was happy about Chen Meng's table tennis gold in the women's singles on Saturday was Chen.
Certainly you could have been given that impression by the hostile crowd, and muted response when she won points, some even booed. Partisan support is not unusual in sport, except that Chen was playing compatriot Sun Yingsha and the venue was full of Chinese fans.
While Sun was cheered to the rafters, Chen wasn't and the atmosphere certainly did not go down well among the country's fans back home.
“I don't understand,” one commented on Weibo. “Every time Sun scored, there was thunderous applause throughout the venue, while Chen's points were met with silence.
“Even when Chen won, there was almost no cheer, and the crowd's reaction was minimal. Why is there such a big difference, given that they are both Chinese athletes?”
Chen, 30, also beat her 23-year-old opponent to the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
But the world No 1 Sun is one of the most popular athletes in China. Her exceptional performances, youthful appearance, and humble personality have made her a sports sensation among her vast number of fans.
The topic “Don't let fandom culture erode Chinese table tennis” soared to the top of the trending list on Weibo on Sunday morning and gained more than 170 million views.
“It seems they treated the table tennis match like a talent show, assuming that Sun should win based on her strength,” one comment said.
Another added: “Sports competitions have lost their inherent purity.”
People expressed sympathy for Chen, believing the back-to-back gold medallist received too little applause.
“It was incredibly tough,” one commented on Weibo. “There were hardly any supporters for Chen in the audience … There were even boos. She had to cheer herself on … Anyone in her position would feel bad.”
“The audience and commentators clearly favoured Sun, and while it's not wrong to support your favourite athlete at the venue, it's outrageous to boo Chen, who is on the same Chinese team,” another said.
“All had no confidence in you, and no one wanted you to win, but you proved them wrong and won.”
Some spectators, upon seeing such scenes on screen during the match, said they “developed a contrary mindset” and began to hope for Chen to win.
“It's great no matter who wins. It's just that the scene was so off-putting that it created a contrary mindset, and I started to hope that Chen would win instead.”
People praised Chen for her stress resistance and strong nerves when playing in such an atmosphere to claim victory.
“A truly inspiring match!” one commented. “It is not just about the result, but also about how a person proves herself through her strength amid the clamour. Congratulations to Chen Meng!”
China, as the ping-pong powerhouse, has swept the gold and silver medals in women's singles since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“It's really ridiculous,” one Weibo user commented. “In previous competitions when Chinese players compete each other in the final, the entire crowd would cheer together for team China – what a magnificent spectacle!
“But today, you can hardly hear a single unified cheer for the China team.”
Chen and Sun will represent China together in the team's event against Egypt on Monday.
Sun would have achieved a coveted grand slam with the women's singles gold last night, which would have also marked her as the fastest Chinese player to achieve it. But she will now have to wait until the Los Angeles Olympics in four years – assuming Chen isn't still playing.
