机长忘带护照 航班延误6小时
近日,美联航洛杉矶飞往上海航班,飞机起飞两小时后,折返备降旧金山机场,原因竟是:机长忘记带护照。
🤔️小作业:
1. What can be inferred about the root cause of such flight diversions from the passage?
A. Current boarding procedures may fail to verify crew passports systematically.
B. Airlines ignore crew documentation checks to save time.
C. Pilots prioritize personal convenience over professional responsibilities.
D. International flight regulations do not require crew to carry passports.

The 'embarrassing' reason for this flight diversion - the pilot forgot their passport
From: Stuff
Planes can get diverted for a host of reasons, whether its mechanical problems, bad weather, or passengers acting up.
But United Airlines flight UA198 from Los Angeles to Shanghai had a very unusual reason for turning back over the Pacific - one of the pilots reportedly left their passport at home.
The plane had been in the air for nearly two hours when it turned back to the US, landing in San Francisco.
The airline messaged passengers: “Your flight diverted to San Francisco due to an unexpected crew-related issue requiring a new crew. Once they arrive, we'll get you back on your way to Shanghai as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for this disruption and appreciate your patience.”
It was reported later the crew-related issue was a missing passport.
Passengers were given US$15 meal vouchers and a new crew had to be found. Eventually the plane took off again, landing nearly six hours behind schedule.
Aviation site A View From The Wing said it was the second similar incident in just a week: “When you board an international flight, gate agents check your passport along with your boarding pass before letting you on the plane. Clearly they should be doing this to crew, too.”
Ben Schlappig, who runs One Mile At A Time, called it an “embarrassing mistake”: “This incident caused at least three hours of extra fuel burn and United needed to pay for two full crews (since the entire crew had to be swapped), not to mention the inconvenience for passengers travelling in both directions, since the return flight had to be delayed as well.”
A similar incident happened last year on a Delta flight.
In a post on Reddit, a passenger wrote: “Yesterday, they board a quarter of the plane, halt boarding as the pilot dashes out of the cockpit and we're sitting in the plane wondering why the flight just got a one-hour delay posted … then they announce the pilot forgot to pack his passport and is driving home to get it … can't make this stuff up.”
In the end, the flight only had a 40-minute delay: “The pilot to his credit made an announcement taking complete responsibility for his mistake.”
