RedNote released a statement responding to public concern that the platform accesses users' location information at a "high-frequency". The platform's official account published a post Thursday evening noting public attention to reports about the app "frequently accessing user information" in the last two days.
After an investigation, the platform claims it does not read user location information without authorization. The frequency of access depends on usage scenarios, with instances of high-frequency access reported by some users being related to individual usage behaviors.
This all comes as multiple RedNote users have reported that the app persistently accessed their location data at unusually high frequencies. One user was reportedly accessed 17,000 times over a period of three days, including accessing their location, photos/videos, device status, schedules and clipboard data, raising privacy concerns.
Reports of location-tracking concerns date back to July 2024, with over 70,000 related posts on social media. iOS users noted that the blue location icon in the status bar remained active even when the app was running in the background.
