A touching essay by Zhang Xiaoran, a ninth-grade student at Dinglan Experimental Middle School in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has taken the internet by storm. Her serene narration and sincere prose, brimming with nostalgia, have moved countless netizens to tears.
Readers praised the essay for "never mentioning homesickness yet embodying it in every line." Comments flooded in: "This winter break assignment made me miss home!" and "It instantly reawakened the hometown buried deep in my heart."
Zhang's Chinese teacher, Wang Yangjun, shared her reading of the essay online. Last winter break, he had assigned his students to write an essay, and upon grading them, Zhang's work immediately stood out.
乘务员推着小车，叫卖着各种商品。年轻人大多置之不理，他们便将目标转向了年迈的老人。但无论推销员的言辞多么天花乱坠、充满诱惑，那位爷爷始终不为所动。然而，当推销员随口一句“孩子爱吃”，他就毫不犹豫地掏了钱，一笔莫名其妙的生意就这样心甘情愿地成交了。
Wang highlighted that what moved him most was Zhang's keen observation of life.
In person, Zhang is far from the composed narrator in the video—her face radiates the exuberance of a typical teenager.

Wang had Zhang share her essay in class, hoping its sincerity would move her peers. "The students listened quietly, absorbing not just the writing but also the emotions—deepening their gratitude for family," he said. When he posted the video online, the response was overwhelming.
有人惊叹于张潇冉强大的文字叙事能力：“记忆变成文字展现在眼前，一幕幕如亲见。”有人感叹：“文字的力量震耳欲聋。”还有人勾起了儿时的记忆：“我的爷爷去世八年了，在我小时候，他每次赶集都会给我买泡泡糖……”
For Zhang, the essay's fame was unexpected. An avid writer who admires author Shi Tiesheng, she now sees Chinese as more than a subject, "It's a tool to express real emotions."
