The Hangzhou-based company said Tuesday that the latest generation of its LLM family has set a "new benchmark" in AI innovation, scoring highly in areas like mathematical reasoning. In some aspects, such as coding proficiency, Alibaba said its Qwen3 series performs better than counterparts from OpenAI and Chinese startup DeepSeek.

Alibaba faces fierce competition in AI, vying for an edge against tech giants like ByteDance and home-grown upstarts like DeepSeek--which stunned the industry with a low-cost, high-performance model early this year. That lit a fire among AI developers and many have been upgrading their offerings and lowering prices.

Last week, internet-search giant Baidu announced AI model upgrades that it said have better capabilities at a lower cost, coming a month after DeepSeek released a major update.

Alibaba said all Qwen3 models are open-source and available globally.

The eight-model Qwen3 series features Alibaba's first hybrid reasoning tech, which combines traditional LLM capabilities with advanced reasoning. The models can switch between "thinking mode" for complex tasks and "non-thinking mode" for fast, general-purpose responses, with applications in mobile devices, autonomous vehicles and robotics, it said.

Shares of Alibaba were 0.9% higher after the announcement.

Qwen3 also powers Alibaba's flagship AI assistant Quark. According to Chinese AI tracker aicpb.com, Quark had the most monthly active users in March, outranking DeepSeek and ByteDance's chatbots in popularity.

Since its debut, the Qwen model family has attracted over 300 million downloads worldwide, Alibaba said.
